Accommodation and Travel

The annual QASM conference is held Sunday to Sunday in August at the Smiggins Hotel. Accommodation is limited, with most members rebooking each year. Early booking at the hotel is recommended. Other options are available, with several lodges being located over the road from the hotel.

Travel for most Queensland members is to fly to Canberra, and catch the conference bus, or drive down to Smiggins. If driving, you will need a National Parks Pass, available online for various periods of time. Parking at the hotel is free and available.

Academic Program

QASM features specialists from the fields of Anesthetics, Dermatology, Colorectal Surgery, General Practice, General Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Sports Medicine, along with Physiotherapy, Paramedicine, Nursing, Medical and Practice Administration and other areas of interest. Presentations are delivered in a collegiate, welcoming environment.

All delegates are asked to deliver a talk about something of interest to the membership. Generally, this will be on a topic from your own field of medicine or allied health. Over the years, we have also had talks from delegates topics ranging from practicing medicine in harsh environments, the history of orthopedics, anaphylaxis in sport, head injuries, advances in ski jacket technology, quarantine and biosecurity, polar medicine, and charity eye missions in Asia. Most, if not all, delegates enjoy hearing about new developments in fields other than their own, and find the academic sessions of the meeting fruitful.

Usually, first attendees are relieved of the pressure to speak, but many members have ‘cut their teeth’ of public speaking at a QASM meeting. The audience is gentle, encouraging, and forgiving of its speakers. Additional morning conference sessions are panel discussions and debates, and you may be asked to participate in one of these.

Guideline for talks is 15-20 minutes for presentation, 5-10 minutes for questions and discussion. Powerpoint or similar is recommended, bring your own laptop or a USB.

2025 Program to be published soon!
