About Us

Queensland Alpine Sports Medicine Pty Ltd  ABN 98 165 637 543 is an independent multi-disciplinary organisation, comprised of medical,  paramedical and allied health professionals who meet one to two times per year; holding a Medication Education event in various locations. It is a broad church with a common bond, being a deep and abiding interest in sport, its participants, and related medical fields.

Although the name references Queensland, anyone with a professional interest in sport, athletic performance, and the prevention and treatment of injury incurred in sport is welcome to register for and attend meetings of QASM.

There is an annual meeting at the Smiggins Hotel, in the NSW Snowy Mountains, held in the week of August which contains the Queensland Exhibition public holiday. In 2025 it will be held from August 10-17th.

QASM has hosted several international meetings, primarily in Italy, usually held in January. The first offshore meeting was in 4-19th January 2004, held at Whistler, British Columbia and Fernie in Alberta, Canada. It was attended by about 60 members, their families and affiliates. It was very much a hands on sports injury conference, with an injury rate of about 25%! Subsequent meetings have been in Italy, in January 2014, 2016,2018, 2020, 2023 and 2025.

QASM is an incorporated entity, with a president, secretary/treasurer and a management committee of six. Anyone attending the annual academic meeting in August and paying a full registration, as well as Emeritus Members, is deemed to be a full member for a period of 24 months from the date of the Annual General Meeting.

Over the years, any surplus funds from registration have been donated to various entities which have aims and activities that QASM has in common. These include the Perisher Ski Patrol, the June Caravan Foundation, (honouring a previous member), Snowy Mountains Wildlife Rescue, Disabled Wintersport Australia and the Medtildas, a team of female medical football players competing in the World Medical Football Championships, held annually.

The organisation has been meeting annually (apart from the Covid years, 2020 and 2021, since 1972). The founder of the group was Dr Bruce Gutteridge, who was President for 20 years from 1972 until 1992. The first meetings were at Charlotte Pass, but transferred to the Smiggins Hotel as the conference grew.

The group affiliated with the Queensland Branch of Sports Medicine Australia in 1991 as a Special Interest Group, an arrangement which continued until 2017, when QASM was established independent from SMA.

From time to time, the group has honoured select members, to be Emeritus Members, usually for being of great service to the group. Currently there are only six members who have been accorded this honour.
